You may still need to create an account through the RuneScape website, and I recommend setting things up there anyway so you can get 2-factor authentication set up (which is important for some extra bank spaces and the Stronghold of Security): https://oldschool.runescape.com/
Additionally, I'd recommend using the RuneLite application to play. This is one of the few third-party clients Jagex allows, has a ton of helpful features, and doesn't require anything fancy to get going: https://runelite.net/
